Chapter 1
“What does a diva has to do to get a freaking drink around here!” The sultry voice sounded loud in the usually quiet exclusive restaurant and had heads turning towards its source.
Leesa’s eyes widened and a smile of extreme pleasure lit up her face. To the surprise of the other women around the table, she jumped up and hurried towards the stunningly beautiful woman who was striding across the room. “Kelly Boothe! What on earth are you doing in town?” They hugged tightly and had the attention of every person in the room. Leesa Wellington had been an international model in her time before she married multi-billionaire Bradley Wellington and given him three children while Kelly Boothe was a famous lingerie model whose exquisite face and body had been plastered in magazines and on billboards all over the world.
“Let me look at you, bitch!” Kelly stepped back and her gaze swept over the elegantly clad woman in admiration. “Almost over the hills with three kids and a husband and looking like you are still walking the runway. I hate you!”
They were oblivious of the stir they were causing!
“Hate all you want,” Leesa said with a pleased smile as she linked arms with the younger woman. “Let me introduce you to my friends.”
The rest of the women, beautiful in their own unique way, could not help but admire the two women coming towards them. One could not help but notice Kelly! She was tall and slender with curves in all the right places. Her breasts were generous for someone her size and she had a flawless coffee and cream complexion set off by the short natural curls she had bleached blonde with a touch of crimson for the most stunning effect! She had sherry colored brown eyes and was wearing expensive faded denim pants that appeared to be painted on her and a figure-hugging blue lace blouse that left her midriff bare. She had large gold hoops in her lobes and diamonds in the holes above that one. Her shoes were strappy black heels that looked impossible to walk in, but she did so with a grace that was undeniable.
“Girls, this is Kelly-”
“We would recognize you anywhere,” Deandre interrupted, extending a hand to her.
“I went out and bought the black lace peignoir you made so famous and Andre could not keep his hands off me for the entire night,” Felicia said with a laugh. “I am Felicia.”
“Carrie, Deidre, Diana, Gina, and our newest member, Ciara. We meet like this twice each month to plan the next charity event,” Leesa told the girl.
Kelly sat and looked around at the women there. “Thank goodness you are not the traditional Stepford wives,” she said feelingly, looking around at the besotted waiter who had come to do her bidding. “A Perrier with a drop of lemon, darling,” she told the young man who scurried away to get what she ordered. “I have read about you in the papers and have seen your pictures there as well.” She looked at Leesa. “I am sorry I missed your wedding, honey.”
“You owe me a boat load of presents,” Leesa warned her.
“So, are you back in town?” Felicia asked her, admiring the girl’s flawless complexion.
“I have been living in Europe for the past three years,” she broke off as the waiter brought the drink to her then she continued as soon as he moved away. “I have done the rounds and have decided that I am taking a much needed break. Darling, did you know that your luncheons are highlighted in the papers?” she asked Leesa.
“We do,” Leesa said with a wry smile. “We are called the ‘wives of the Elite Club members,’ so everything we do is chronicled.”
“I am looking for a man.” Kelly made the announcement, causing the women around the table to stare at her in surprise.
“What happened to Jean Pierre?” Leesa asked, breaking the silence.
“The pig turned out to be married with several children and a mistress to boot!” Kelly sipped her water and looked at the women around the table. “I told him to get the hell out of my apartment and it was then I realized that I needed something else than these no good men with their silver tongues. Reminds me too much of the projects.”
“You are not from the projects, Kelly.”
“My mother was from the projects so I know what I am talking about.” She emptied her glass and the waiter materialized again. “Another one, darling, and maybe some fruit.” The women watched in amusement as he hurried away.
“You have an ardent admirer there,” Deidre said with a laugh.
“They start out that way and then become like little children later on,” Kelly said with a dramatic sigh. “I want what you ladies appear to have. Any of the husbands have brothers who are single?”
“Andre has a brother, but he is married,” Fe
licia told her with a smile.
“Crap!” she muttered. “Well, I am on the lookout for a man if you hear anything.”
“I never thought I would see the day when you are thinking of settling down,” Leesa said with a shake of her head. “You used to say that changing diapers was not for you.”
“I have gotten older and wiser, and I am not getting any younger as much as it looks as if I am.” Her laugh peeled out causing heads to swivel. “I have to find me a man by the end of the year.”
“It’s now May. How do you hope to accomplish that?” Ciara asked her, fascinated by the confidence and boldness of the beautiful woman.
“Darling, I get what I go after. Ask Leesa.”
“It’s true,” Leesa said with a nod. “I remember we were on assignment in Lisbon and we were told that the gig had been postponed due to lack of funds and Kelly went straight to the promotors and demanded that the show go on and there was no further hesitation.
“There you go. Who wants to place a wager that I am married come December?” Her tapered eyebrows lifted as she looked around.
“We are not betting against you,” Leesa told her firmly. “We will join in the hunt. Hopefully, you will become one of us!”
“To my finding a man worthy of being with a woman like me!” she said, raising her glass.
*****
Kelly let herself into the charmingly simple but elegant apartment and hurriedly kicked off her shoes, padding to the kitchen to get herself a glass of wine. Living in Paris had gotten her hooked on the beverage and she found she had become quite a connoisseur. Jean Pierre had taught her quite a bit as well. She had not told Leesa and the others everything. She swirled the liquid around the glass and sat on one of the stools. She had fallen a little in love with him. How could she not? He had been a passionate and enthusiastic lover and was the traditional tall and darkly handsome European lover who treated her as if she was made of spun glass! She should have suspected when he had not wanted them to leave her apartment to go anywhere. He had told her that he wanted to keep her to himself and he hated when the other men leered at her with water drooling from their lips. When they were in her apartment, he was sure she belonged to him alone. She had been on contract to a lingerie company in Paris and would go out during the day to shoot commercials and make the rounds at the different stores and come home in the evenings to some scrumptious meal he had prepared. He had been a chef at some cozy restaurant. He had told her he had to work through the nights sometimes when he could not make it back to the apartment and she had believed him.
She had loved living in Paris! Loved the charming countryside, the beautiful weather, and the laid back joviality of the people. It was the city of romance and she had been prepared to settle down and build a life with Jean Pierre. But that had come crashing to the ground one night as they were leaving her apartment to go and get some coffee. A lone photographer who had been lurking in the bushes nearby snapped their picture as they came out hand in hand and he had gone berserk!
Their photos and a caption that said: “Lingerie Model Kelly and Lover Out For Stroll” had come out the next morning and he had had to come clean with her, telling her that he had a wife, but they were on the verge of being divorced.
“I have children too, Cherie, so you know it is going to take a little time to sort out,” he had told her pleadingly.
She had not hesitated to throw him and his few belongings out the door and told him that she never wanted to see him again. She had gotten disgusted with the whole thing and had decided not to renew her contract with the agency. She had been away from home for almost four years. She had spent a year going from Spain to Italy and had settled in Paris. Her mother had wanted her to come to the UK to stay with her for a little bit, but she had declined. Kerry Boothe had been divorced from Kelly’s father for the past ten years and he had been married four times already and was now living in the Bahamas with wife number four. Kerry Boothe had not remarried but was teaching English literature at a university in the UK.
She finished the glass and went to rinse it out, putting it on the counter to drain before going into her bedroom to strip and get into the shower. She had meant every word she had said at lunch. She was going to find someone she could love and someone who would love her back!

Kane Takahashi stepped into the restaurant and had the manager running forward, his florid face flushed with anxiety. It was midafternoon and the place was humming with activity.
“Mr. Takahashi, sir.” Joel Aikens hardly stopped himself from ringing his hands. “I had no idea you were coming.”
Kane took a look around and his quick eyes noticed the dinginess of the wallpaper hanging near the alcove in the far corner. “We are redecorating all the restaurants in the different states with the Takahashi’s colors and I will be sending in a team to tear down the wallpaper.”
“Yes, sir.” He was nervous and could hardly wait to get away from the tall, forbidding-looking man with the stern expression on his face. “Just let me know when that is and I will clear out the place.”
“The decorators will be doing the bulk of the work on a Sunday,” Kane told him coolly, waving to an acquaintance of his.
“Of course, sir. May I interest you in something from the kitchen?”
“No, thank you. I have a meeting in a few minutes.” With another look around, he nodded and then left.
Joel dug out an immaculate handkerchief from his pocket and mopped his brow. He went into the kitchen and looked around at the place buzzing with the sounds of cutting and instructions being passed around. He was going to have to go through with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything was up to par!
Kane sat in the meeting and listened attentively, at odd times making little jottings on a notepad he had in front of him. It was a meeting of the board and the decisions were being weighed as to whether or not they should get rid of some of the supermarkets in the states where there weren’t any profits being made.
“I think we should close the doors of the ones in Cleveland and Nebraska. We are not seeing any returns from those and we have not seen any in a few years,” Tim Brody, an elderly man with a shocking head of white hair, declared.
“What about the housewives who depend on Takahashi Supermarkets for their weekly supplies?” another member protested.
“What do you think, Kane?” They all turned to look at the silent man at the head of the conference table.
“I need to see the figures,” he said without his expression changing. “We are going to send a team to both places and give them a facelift to improve the profit margin. Find out what the needs there are and act accordingly.”
“I will get on to that right away, Kane,” his assistant, a young eager man by the name of Marcus, said as he made a note on his iPad. He had gotten the position a year ago after his assistant of three years had started showing a personal interest in him. Kane was a Japanese American who was very proud of his Asian roots and had no intention of sullying it by marrying someone outside of it. His parents had drilled it into him since he was growing up, and even though they had died two years after each other, he still remained firm about it. He was casually seeing a young Japanese girl who was a chef in one of the restaurants he owned, and he had contemplated marrying her in maybe a year or two. He turned thirty-one in April, but he was in no hurry to settle down and become a husband and father just yet. Time enough for that.
He listened some more and made his contribution, then called for a dismissal of the meeting.
“Give me a few minutes before you come in,” he told Marcus as the man hurried after him. “Lee, please get me the sales department and tell them I need a report ASAP.”
“Yes, sir,” she called after him as he continued walking towards his office without breaking a stride. Marcus waited until the doors were closed before he looked at the svelte middle-aged woman who had been Kane’s secretary for the past three years.
“What’s his schedul
e like?”
“I sent you an updated one a minute ago. You need to check your email every few minutes, Marcus. I am not going to be responsible for your mistakes,” she told him coolly.
“You are beginning to sound like him,” he said wryly as he quickly went into to his email. “Ah, here it is. See you later.”
Lee looked after him and shook her head, wondering how long he was going to last.

“It is nothing too big, darling, just the usual lingerie line coming out for the summer,” Sally coaxed as she tried to convince her biggest client to get back out there.
“I told you that I was taking a break, Sally. What part of that did you not understand?” Kelly switched off the treadmill and climbed off, reaching for the towel to wipe the sweat from off her face and pulled the sweat band from around her forehead.
“I know, honey,” the woman continued. “It’s their summer blow out promotion to coincide with the 4th of July celebration in the square.”
Kelly uncapped the bottle of water and drank it down thirstily before she responded. “For the first time in years I did not have to shave my legs! And I ordered pizza without despairing about the calories and the pounds I am going to put on if I indulge. And guess what I had for dessert last night?”
“What?”
“Double chocolate chip ice cream and I squeezed a generous amount of whipped cream on the top and I did not feel an ounce of guilt! You want to know why?”
“You do not tend to-”
“It’s because I knew I was not going in front of the camera, so I did not have to care about pounds!” Kelly put the empty bottle away and sat on the floor to do her regular pushups. “Now should I give up all that to go on a regime when I am enjoying my freedom?”
“You have not heard how much they are offering?” Sally sounded hopeful.
“I have money in my account that I cannot use up no matter how much shopping I do.”
“It is for charity.”
Kelly breathed out and then flopped onto her back. “I hate you.”
