Chapter 1
“Just one last con darling and that’s it,” the suave and elegantly dressed man reclining on the love seat told her charmingly.
“You told me that the last time Hanson.” Amani got up from her seat at the edge of the desk and wandered over to look at the painting on the wall facing her. She studied it carefully, noticing the fine etchings and the almost amateur lines. Over the years she had become an expert at identifying fine art and that was because of the man lounging in the chair next to her. Hanson Blair was her mentor, and a surrogate father, who had saved her from life on the streets. He took her under his wings and gave her somewhere to stay when she was fifteen and had ran away from the group home where she had been staying. He had discovered her trying to pick the lock on his car, and instead of turning her over to the authorities he had decided to rescue her instead. She owed him everything. With that knowledge she had found it very easy to transition from heisting wallets and breaking into cars, to becoming an avid student who had graduated from all that to become one of the best con women ever known. She was an expert in sliding out a wallet from the tightest fitting clothing to slipping off a watch from the wrist, but she no longer did anything like that. She was now into art and expensive jewelry. But she had decided in May, just a month ago when she had celebrated her twenty-eight birthday, that she was done with all of that. She had not been caught, and she had a feeling that if she continued she would be daring fate. She wanted to settle down and get married, live a normal life. The excitement of the con had disappeared for her and she had more than enough money to live her own life. She was very grateful to Hanson, but she figured she had paid him enough with the jobs she had pulled off. He operated an art gallery as a front for his more nefarious schemes and the gallery was doing very well.
“I absolutely mean it to.” Hanson’s attractive fine boned face was appreciative as he stared at the women he considered to be a like a daughter to him. He was certifiable gay and had never married or felt the need to sire a child. But he was proud of the beautiful woman standing next to him staring at the painting critically. He could hardly identify her with the scruffy and rude teenager he had caught trying to break into his car when she was fifteen. She had been pretty then, underneath all that dirt and the scruffy look, but over the years Amani Lincoln had grown and blossomed into an incredibly beautiful woman with a coffee and cream complexion and alluring curves that drew attention to her wherever she went. Her thick dark naturally curly hair had been cut short and suited her narrow face perfectly. She had large dark brown eyes with long eyelashes that seemed to dominate her face and a generous mouth that drew attention immediately. She was sophisticated and charming when she wanted to be and when the job required her to be, a chameleon who was able to adapt to any circumstance. She did not usually allow personal relationships and had only been involved in two over the years. When she was on the job she was focused. She never allowed anything or anyone to break that focus.
“I know you have this ridiculous urge to settle down and become a wife.” There was a slight distaste in his tone and Amani hid a smile as she stared at him. His dark hair was sprinkled with gray and his light blue eyes had that weary cynicism of someone who had seen what the world had to offer and was not in the least bit impressed. But Amani loved him! He was the closest thing to a parent and he had always looked out for her. “I have this very important client who insists that he has to have that particular Renoir that is hanging in Liam Moses’ apartment. The commission is staggering darling. It will set you up for life.”
“I already have a lot of money thanks to the jobs I did in the past,” she pointed out as she walked over to sit next to him. It was late afternoon and they were sitting inside his office, while downstairs the gallery was alive with a showing of a new and upcoming artist. He had capable assistants to handle the work and so he had taken time to have this talk with Amani.
“Just this once,” he insisted. “Liam Moses is one of the richest collectors of fine arts and jewelries. His family’s money is dated all the way back to the early eighteenth century. He is heir to the vast Moses fortune and parties like there is no tomorrow. His love for beautiful women is widely known and well documented.”
“So you want me to seduce him and get him to take me to his apartment?”
“That’s just it darling.” Hanson waved a slender hand desultorily. “He does not take women up to his apartment. It’s a veritable fortress, and for good reason. It is rumored that the place is like a damn palace with the most expensive art and sumptuous furnishing. He has this little love nest that he takes his women to. Even though he is a slut, he is a very cautious one.”
“So how am I going to get him to take me to his apartment?” Amani demanded, already feeling the distaste of doing this particular job. She had no problem taking from the rich because she knew that whatever she took would not be missed very much, everything was insured. But she did not relish trying to seduce a man she had no interest in. She had seen Liam Moses’ photos countless times on magazine covers and on the internet. She had also seen him once or twice at several functions she had attended and had hated the way women seemed to fawn all over him. It made her sick!
“You are going to play hard to get,” Hanson told her with a smile. “Men like
Liam Moses are not used to women ignoring them and you are going to pique his interest by doing exactly that.”
Amani sighed, knowing that she was not going to say no. “When will I put this into action?”
“This very weekend. I have finagled an invite to his baby sister’s birthday party, being held at the Belgrave hotel on Saturday.”
“Baby sister?”
“Not exactly baby, she will be twenty-one and it is sort of a debutante ball.”
“People still have those?”
“Very wealthy people do,” Hanson said with a mocking smile. “He adores her, so there is no doubt he will be there. We just have to get you the proper gown to make sure that he notices you and I know just the place to get it. I will call Romano’s and make my selection. Your job is to get him to notice you and then ignore him completely.”
“What if he loses interest?”
Hanson laughed at that. “Darling I am gay and I cannot take my eyes off you. Liam Moses will not know what hit him!”
*****
“You had better not miss my birthday party Liam or I will never forgive you!” Lorelei Moses told her brother as soon as he picked up the phone.
“When have I ever?” Liam asked her dryly. “Even when they border on the ridiculous and the frivolous. From princess themes to that particularly horrid one where we all had to dress up in nineteen twenties outfits. I have endured it all because I happen to love you. What is it this time?”
“A debutante ball.”
“Ah.” The single word was loaded with distaste and Lorelei could not help but laugh. “I will be there under extreme duress. It is not every time you turn twenty-one.”
“Who are you bringing?”
“I think I will come solo this time. I am in between relationships right now.”
“Which is code for the fact that you dumped that horrible blonde you were seeing!” his sister exclaimed. “Mother is threatening to pick out a wife for you.”
“And she knows that will not work,” he said with a laugh. “I will see you at the party darling.” He hung up before she could rope him into anything else. He was at the club where he had just finished playing a round of tennis with some friends. He had just come back from a trip to Italy, where he had spent a week acquiring a particular diamond that he had been wanting for the past few months, and he was feeling restless. His dark gray eyes wandered over the immaculate grounds and saw that there was a lively game of volleyball going on. The June weather was very good, with the brilliant sunshine dappling everything in its path and shimmering on the pool that was near to him. He was just contemplating going for a swim when a tall leggy blonde sauntered over to him. He knew her. She was one of the member’s daughters and the same age as his sister. Even though she was stunning he preferred his women a little older and more mature, so he was not interested.
“I was wondering if I could join you,” her voice dripped with allure and he hid a smile as he watched her sit across from him, wearing a red swim suit and a thin cover-up that revealed her full breasts.
“You already did,” he pointed out in amusement.
“That I did!” she said with a low sultry laugh as she crossed her long tanned legs. “I am Nicole by the way.”
“Nice to meet you Nicole. Where do you go to school?”
He could see the slight frown of displeasure on her brow at the turn of the conversation and watched as she struggled not to show it! “I am trying to be a model.”
His thick dark brows lifted at that. “Trying?”
She pouted. “It’s not very easy to get into.”
“How hard can it be?” Liam asked sardonically.
“I have to lose like ten pounds before I am even considered.”
His gray eyes wandered over her already slender body, carelessly, before he responded. “Is it worth it?”
“Of course it is! I just have to remember not to eat certain things and stay away from alcohol for a little bit. Daddy says that he will make sure that I get what I want.”
“I am sure he will.” Liam was suddenly bored and could not wait to get away. The conversation as vapid as the young girl seated in front of him. “All the best.”
“You are leaving?”
“I am afraid so. I have the sudden urge to indulge in a full house burger and I would not want to tempt you.” He walked away with her staring after him. He walked over to one of the outdoor bars and was handed his usual drink: bourbon straight from the bottle. He was bored and when he became bored he did crazy things, like sleep with women who were highly unsuitable and throw lavish parties that lasted for days! He had been referred to as the idle rich, the incredibly handsome playboy who left brokenhearted women in every continent, and he certainly lived up to his reputation. Nothing posed a challenge for him! He never had to chase women because they were always chasing him, and his wealth ensured that he never had to fight to make a living. He did not sit in an office, he had no need to do so and even if that were the case he was too restless to be an executive. His family had the most treasured collection of art and expensive jewelry in the world, some of which were showcased in galleries and museums all across the world. He came from a very long generation of titled wealth, somewhere in the distant past there had been dukes as well as earls in his family. He was accustomed to wealth and accustomed to being catered to. He usually took it for granted, but the last few days he found he wanted something more. He had no idea what he wanted though! He tossed back the drink and left the bar in search of something to eat.
*****
Amani sipped her wine slowly as she channel surfed, discarding one network after the other before settling on a light comedy that she had watched several times before. Her apartment was modern, but not overly so, and she was proud of it because it was somewhere she could call home. She owned the place. Over the years she had never dreamed that it was possible to actually live somewhere, much less have a place of her own! She owed it all to Hanson and that was one of the reasons why she could never tell him no. He had picked her up off the streets and turned her life around. She remembered when he had first brought her to his charming, villa-type home. She had stood in the doorway staring at the miles of carpet and the pale silk wallpapers in awe.
“If you are thinking of stealing anything darling let me help you get rid of that thought. If even a dinner fork is missing I am going to do what I should have done when I saw you trying to break into my car. I will have no hesitation in turning you over to the police and be done with it.”
“So why don’t you?” she had asked him belligerently.
He had laughed at her mutinous expression. “Because I have plans for you. Go on and take a shower. I will set out some clothes for you to put on when you are done and give you something to eat.”
When she had hesitated he had realized what she was thinking.
“I am gay darling and besides you are a little too young and far too unkempt. You have nothing to fear from me.”
And he had told her the truth! She had spent nights in the bedroom, terrified that he would come in and attack her in her sleep, but over the weeks that followed she had come to trust him and he had taught her a lot. When he had told her what he had in store for her, she had balked at the idea. But she became fascinated by it as the time went by. Now, thirteen years later and having been on her own for the past five years, she still owed him and would do anything for him. She never knew her parents and never tried to find out who they were. She had heard vague talks about being left on the steps of the home by a woman who appeared to be drugged out of her mind, but never had the interest to dig into her past. She had made it without them, not in the conventional way but she made it nonetheless! Hanson had insisted that she go to school, even though she had protested that there was no need for that considering what he wanted her to do. But he had told her in his bored cultured voice: “I am highly educated darling and I hate it when I am having a conversation with someone who cannot form a coherent sentence.” He had
pinned her with his gaze. “Do you know what coherent means?”
She had shaken her head.
“Just as I thought. You are going to get an education.” And she had, the highest the country had to offer! She had finished high school and had gone on to college, graduating with honors in science and finance! It had amused her to know that the rich girls she had befriended had no idea that she was the cause of them losing their jewelry and money. They had thought that the campus had been invaded by a very clever criminal. She had taken them out of spite and to prove that she could do it.
He had changed her life in more ways than one and she would be eternally grateful to him! Amani finished the wine and put the glass on the table in front of her. She was not really watching the comedy but gave it a cursory glance every now and then. She had told Hanson the truth: she wanted a normal life, one with a husband and children if possible, and she was determined to have that. She had no idea what her lineage was and had expressed that concern to Hanson.
In his usual inimitable way he had told her drolly: “You are smart and not a raving lunatic, that much we can very well confirm, and you are a beautiful woman whom any man would be lucky to be with. If you are that concerned you should investigate the matter.”
“I am not that concerned,” She had told him firmly.
“Are you sure?” he had asked her quizzically.
“I am positive.”
“There you are! Problem solved! Parents have a way of complicating things anyway; consider yourself fortunate you have only me.”
“You have parents,” she had pointed out.
“And my mother is a stuck up parasite who is not talking to me because she is ashamed of who I am.”
“Not your dad.”
“My dad is a weak willed moron who has to hide the fact that he is talking to me.”
“I get the point,” Amani had told him dryly.
“Exactly,” he had told her with a grin.
Amani pressed the off button and got to her feet, deciding to go to bed. She was not going to think about the job she had to do until Friday, when she would decide on her game plan!
