“We are not having this discussion again Moya!” Jared said grimly as he finished buttoning up his shirt. They'd been arguing since the previous night and she could tell he was starting to get more than annoyed. “You knew who I was when you met me so I don't see why you're trying to change me.”
Moya took a deep breath, determined to try and be calm and reasonable. She loved him but it was getting to the point where she was wondering if it was worth it. “All I'm saying is that we've been going out for the past six months and there's no sign that you're willing to settle down. If we're planning a future together you're going to have to stop racing. Every time you go out there to race my heart stops beating and I wonder if you're going to come back!”
“I know what I'm doing.” His expression softened as he stared at her. “I quit racing professionally when I was in that accident and almost lost my life but racing is in my blood and it's something that I love doing. I would never stop you from doing something you love.”
“If that something I love gets in the way of my relationship then trust me I would give it up in a heartbeat.”
He stared at her in silence as he reached for his tie. “That’s not fair.”
“You know what’s not fair? Sitting at home waiting to get a call that you're injured or dead!” she cried as she walked into the bathroom. It was getting so frustrating. They were arguing all the time and it was taking a toll on them. Otherwise their relationship was perfect. He was handsome and virile and the lovemaking was out of this world; they had chemistry that could be seen from a mile away, Jared Armstrong was a computer software giant who had his fingers in many pies. He'd founded his company several years ago and had built it from the ground up. His company was involved in sponsoring events such as car racing and marathons. He was tall and athletic with dark brown hair and green eyes he'd inherited from his Celtic mother. When Moya had first met him she'd been aware that he was a playboy and that women were always throwing themselves at him. When he'd started pursuing her she'd thought he'd just wanted to get her into bed but that had proven to be false. They'd fallen in love quickly and she'd moved in with him. He'd asked her to marry him several times but she'd told him she wanted to wait. Secretly she wanted to see if this was going to last. He was Jared Armstrong and she was merely a sports writer.
She felt him come up behind her.
“I don’t want to fight,” he said softly. “When we fight I'm grouchy and I go to the office and growl at everyone there.” His fingers lifted her hair from her shoulders and his lips found her neck. Moya shivered as his tongue tasted her skin. When he touched her she went weak. The first time he'd made love to her she'd disgraced herself by begging him for more. She hadn't been able to help herself. As soon as he touched her she became putty in his hands.
“Stop,” she whispered, her hands trembling. He was already dressed to leave but she was going in late today. He slid the silk robe off her shoulders and turned her around, his eyes wandering over her naked flesh. He'd admitted that he'd been caught by her slender curves and her generous bosom at the party and when he'd undressed her that first time they made love she'd seen him stare at her flawless coffee and cream skin and long legs. Legs that had wrapped around him as he plunged into her. He cupped her breasts now and moved his thumbs over her hardened nipples.
“Jared,” her breathing was ragged, her body heating up.
“We're great together. Don’t spoil it,” he said huskily.
All the passion and desire she'd been feeling suddenly vanished as she stared at him. With a willpower she never realized she had she pushed him away from her, dark eyes blazing. “Go to hell!”
He shoved his hands into his pockets and rocked back on his heels, his eyes wandering over her curves before looking into her eyes. “See you later darling,” he said insolently and left the bathroom. Moya quickly gathered her robe and put it on, wrapping her hands around her waist. She turned to look into the mirror at her flushed skin and flashing eyes. She lifted a hand and raked long fingers through her tangled hair. She didn't want to leave him but what choice did she have?

“A glitch in the latest software,” his assistant Leonard hurried in after him and closed the doors behind him. He stopped and watched as his boss shrugged off the pearl grey jacket he was wearing and slung it carelessly over the arm of a chair in the large office. He gauged his movements and sighed inwardly as he realized that there had been trouble at home, which meant trouble at work as well. “Also your mother called and demanded that you call her back. She has dinner plans.”
“What glitch?” Jared asked as he took his seat behind his massive desk. “If it's something that can be handled by the tech department I don’t see why you're coming to me about it. I pay them very good money to iron out difficulties.”
“I've already spoken to them and they're on it,” Leonard said hastily. When he'd come to work at Armstrong Software five years earlier he'd been smitten with the tall handsome man who'd hired him. He'd spent hours admiring him and the way he worked hard and partied hard. He'd said something to that effect a few months after working at the company and instead of being offended Jared had laughed in amusement. “I'm into women Leonard. But I must say I'm flattered.”
Leonard had thought that would have been the end of his employment but Jared hadn't fired hi
m and he'd been so grateful that he showed it with his extreme loyalty. He guarded his boss’ territory like an angry bear and made sure that his life was made easier.
“About your mother?”
Jared looked at him for a moment and then smiled slightly. “Tell her I'll call when I can.”
“She's going to cut me up in little pieces if I give her that message,” Leonard murmured.
“In that case I'll call her,” Jared said with a smile. “Hold my calls for a few minutes.”
“You have a meeting at ten.”
Jared nodded and the Leonard disappeared.

He sat there for a minute thinking about Moya and felt the frustration tunneling through his tensed body. She didn't get that when he raced it gave him an outlet to channel his high energy and allowed the adrenalin to flow. He didn't go about it the reckless way he used, but it was something that he loved and he had no intention of stopping.
He picked up the phone and dialed his mother’s number.
“It’s about time!” she said in an exasperated voice. “You're my only child and it seems like I have to make an appointment to speak to you.”
“How are you Mother?” he asked her mildly.
“When are you and Moya coming to dinner?”
“Not this weekend. We have a function to attend.”
Jaclyn Armstrong sighed theatrically. “I haven't seen you in two weeks, Jared.”
“I know, and we'll make it up to you. Next weekend.”

Robert Mayes, the editor-in-chief and her boss, finished reading the article and then looked up at Moya who was sitting across the desk from him. “This is good,” he murmured. He'd thought that since she was seeing a billionaire that she would stop working at Sports Unlimited but she'd told him firmly that she had no intention of leaving her job.
“I'm not going to allow you special favors because of who you're with,” he'd warned her.
“I wouldn't expect you to,” she'd responded.
“Just good?” Moya’s tapered brows lifted as she looked at him.
“Damned good, but you already know that.” He leaned forward on his untidy desk. He was more than her boss, he'd been like a father to her when her dad had died from a heart attack when she was still in high school. He'd been in love with her mother since they were young kids growing up together but she'd fallen in love with his best friend. He still looked out for both of them. “I was afraid that you would persuade that boyfriend of yours to open up a magazine for you.”
“The competition would be too stiff,” she said with a grin.
“Everything okay?” he asked her quietly.
“He isn't willing to give up racing.”
They both knew who she was talking about.
“Might I make a suggestion?” Robert asked, leaning forward on his desk.
“When have you ever asked before?” she asked wryly.
He smiled at that. “Let it go.”
She shook her head. “I can’t. I live in fear every time he gets in that sports car of his and gets on that strip. I used to go and support him but I cover my eyes as soon as he takes off and I stopped going with him. He goes every Saturday, Robert, and spends the entire day with people who share the same passion. I sit at home or go out with Marlene and pretend that I'm not waiting for news that he's in an accident or worse. I cannot do it anymore.”
“You love him, don’t you?”
Moya smiled slightly. “More than I ever thought it possible to love someone.”
“Then you have to find a way to live with who he is.”
“I can’t,” she said faintly. “I cannot spend my life living in fear.”
*****
“I'm leaving him.”
Her friend looked at her sharply. Moya had left the magazine at six and had called her best friend to meet her at a nearby bar. The place was filled with people getting off work and chilling out before going home.
“Talk to him again.”
“We fight every single day about the same thing.”
“I've always envied you. In high school you were the head cheerleader and had the best-looking guy on the football team. You were popular and I've never seen you look even slightly unattractive. When your dad died I said to myself that it was the first time something bad had happened to you but then you met handsome billionaire Jared Armstrong, a man who'd dated celebrities! When he met you all that stopped. He became monogamous and devoted to you. Are you hoping to find another gorgeous billionaire who is perfect?”
Moya stared at her friend for a moment and then looked down into her margarita. “That’s unfair.”
“He is who he is Moya,” Marlene said patiently. “You two love each other and I'm envious of the love you share. I've been married to Richard for five years and we barely speak to each other. I want what you have.”
Moya felt ashamed that she was being so selfish. “I'm sorry honey,” she reached across and held her friend’s hands. “What are you going to do about that?”
Marlene shrugged. “Our son is only three years old. We have to think about that.”
“And there isn’t any chance of therapy?”
“He refuses to go.”
“What if I talked to him?”
Marlene laughed at that. “He'll probably tell you that he wishes I was as beautiful as you and that I wasn't so plain. Look at me! I've been trying to get rid of the baby weight for the past three years and nothing's working. I don’t have your looks honey, or your figure so I guess he doesn't feel like trying.”
“Then screw him!” Moya said firmly. “You're a beautiful person who gets to mold young minds. You're a very good teacher and he should be proud that you're his wife.”
“Thank you honey, but somehow that doesn't make me sleep well at night. I have a husband who doesn't touch me and barely speaks to me. Don’t leave him Moya for such a small thing. Just try and work it out.”
*****
He came home that evening and saw her in the living room with a glass of wine. She'd showered and changed into a dark blue shorts that revealed her long legs and a matching lace top that revealed her midriff. Her long black curls were piled on top of her head. He hadn't called her during the day even though he'd been tempted to several times. His apartment was a bachelor pad and he'd told her that she was free to make changes but so far she hadn't done so. He hung up his jacket and loosened his tie before coming into the living room where she was. A cheerful fire burned in the hearth and made the place cozy. Before it had been just a place to crash when he was in the area but now it had become a home because of her.
“Hey,” he slung his jacket over the arm of the sofa nearest to him. He unbuttoned his light pink shirt and came over to sit next to her. “How are you?”
“I'm fine,” she said without looking at him. “How was work?”
He took the glass of wine from her and drank from it. “Leonard was a pain in the ass as usual,” he said with a grimace. “I should fire him.”
“Except you won’t,” she said with a ghost of a smile. “And besides, he makes your life much easier.”
“True,” he handed her back the glass. “Mother's complaining that we haven't been at her place for dinner in a long time.”
She looked at him then. “We have something on Saturday.”
“I told her that.” His green eyes searched her face. “Are we good?”
“What do you think?”
He sighed and leaned back against the cushions. “I hate fighting with you,” he said briefly. “I'm not used to this. Usually when I'm in a relationship and it starts to get rough I bail but it’s different with you. I love you Moya, and I want to make this work.”
*****
She turned sideways and looked at him. He was always able to make her heart race. “So do I.”
He plucked the wine glass from her hand and drained the contents before putting it on the table. He took his shirt off and then his undershirt, exposing h
is bare, muscled chest with the sprinkling of fine gold hairs before reaching for her. She knew that she should tell him what she was feeling. She knew she should tell him that she was thinking of leaving him, but somehow the words got stuck inside her throat as he pulled her onto his lap. He pulled the tiny blouse over her head and growled deep inside his throat as her bare breasts sprang free. He cupped them, weighing them in his palms, and she could feel his erection stirring. There had been speculation about their relationship in the papers. He was used to the limelight and took it in stride whenever they went out together but she wasn't used to it. She also wasn't used to people wondering how long their relationship was going to last.
He bent his head and took a nipple inside his mouth, his tongue swirling around the tight bud. Moya’s fingers curled into his shoulders as the spark shot straight through her body. Her moans echoed around the room as he continued to pull her nipple inside his mouth. “Jared!” she gasped, needing more. He lifted her off of him and fought to get his erection out. She pulled her shorts down and he groaned in pleasure as he realized that she wasn't wearing panties. She straddled him and sank down, purring in pure pleasure as he deep went into her. She let her head fall back as his lips wandered over her body and his fingers dug into her hips. She rode him frantically and before long the echoes of their combined orgasms sounded throughout the room.
*****
She watched him sleep. He'd brought her into the bedroom and had started all over again and then had fallen into an exhausted sleep with one arm thrown over her. They hadn't spoken, carried away by their passion. She was propped up onto the pillows as she watched him sleep. He always slept naked and had persuaded her to do so as well. She always admired his body, the line leading down to his firm and taut buttocks, his broad shoulders and his powerful arms. He kept in shape and even though he had a fully-equipped gym in the apartment, he also went to the gym he had a membership at three times a week. He was a billionaire but wasn't hooked on possessions. He had a three-bedroom apartment that had the best furniture but was very sparsely decorated. She looked around the bedroom and smiled at the amount of space. The bed was king sized and set on a dais. A chest of drawers stood to one corner and he'd ordered a vanity for her when she'd moved in. The closet was a walk-in with dozens of shelves because he believed in dressing for success. He gave her whatever she wanted and even though she'd protested at the amount of clothes and shoes and the money he'd put into her account, he'd ignored her. She'd met his rich friends and the wives of the members of the club he belonged to. She wanted to believe that they could get married and have children together but she hated what he did. She hated his passion and couldn't get past it. She used her slim fingers to brush back a lock of hair that had fallen over his forehead. She'd met his mother and they'd hit it off immediately so there was no problem there. He'd met her mother and had charmed her immediately.
