  Chapter 1

Carole Brown-Bingham stared at herself critically in the mirror. Her twenty-seventh birthday had passed last Thursday and Walter had taken her to dinner at Lucy’s; the trendy new restaurant on Midland Place where the hostesses dressed in expensive suits and escorted you to your seats, making sure you were okay and that you got everything you ordered. It was a place with no menu and anything you ordered you received it done to your liking. She'd ordered the chicken in peanut sauce and it had been delicious. There had been a cake and candles, and a string quartet had played happy birthday for her. She passed her hands over the silk of her pajamas and watched as the material molded to her curves. She was by no means beautiful, certainly not like the other wives and she wasn't as confident as they were. She had short jet black hair that was curly thanks to the expensive cream she applied to it each day. Her dark brown eyes were large, and probably her best feature, and she had a winning smile that had served her well when she'd been a realtor before she married Walter. She had a round face that would get rounder if she wasn't careful with her weight, but she exercised daily and when the weather was nice she would go for a run in the evenings after her husband came home. Her lips were full and provocative, as her husband put it, and had been the first thing he'd noticed about her at that party a year and six months ago. They had stared at each other across the room and had felt the gravitational pull. They'd danced together that evening and had ended up at his luxurious apartment making love for the entire night. He had then proposed to her and she'd said yes!

She'd quit her job, given up her apartment and moved into his. She'd met his mother, a snotty black-haired witch who pretended that she approved of their union when Walter was around and showed her true feelings when she was alone with Carole. She'd expected and wanted better for her son, not someone who sold houses for a living. Now Carole attended functions with her very wealthy husband and went did charity work with the other wives. They lived in the penthouse suite of an apartment owned by her husband and she drove a Mercedes Benz that she'd received as a gift when she married him. She stretched her left hand out and looked at the dazzling diamond solitaire. She went to restaurants and was greeted with respect because of her last name.

She jumped slightly as she heard a sound behind her. “Excuse me Miss, but a package was delivered for you,” Sara, the middle aged African American housekeeper said. She'd been a part of Walter’s life since he was a child.

She turned to face the woman and forced a smile. “Thank you, Sara. I'll be right down. Please close the door on your way out.”

The woman nodded and left the room. Carole had already spoken to her about coming into the room without being invited, and she'd also spoken to her husband about it. He'd laughed and told her that Sara was like a second mother to him and was used to doing what she did. Carole didn't like it one bit. She loved her privacy and it felt strange to her to even have someone working for her. After the honeymoon she'd told Walter that she wanted to be a wife in every sense of the word.

“What do you mean?” he'd asked her

“I want to cook for you and fold your clothes,” she had told him dreamily.

He had looked at her as if she'd told him that she wanted to dance naked in the park.

“No,” he'd told her quietly. “You're my wife and there are things you're required to do. I won’t have you doing housework. Besides, Sara wouldn't like you invading her territory.” So that had been that.

She glanced at the clock at the table and saw that it was approaching nine a.m. She'd promised to meet Savannah for lunch to talk about what had been on her mind ever since she'd married Walter.

“Walter, hold up!” Travis called out as Walter strode quickly in the direction of the conference room.

“I'm running late for a meeting Travis,” he said a little impatiently as he stopped and turned to face his online marketing manager.

“I know, but this can't wait. The numbers are in and we have a winner, man!” he declared enthusiastically. “I told you that venturing into electronics would be a big hit.”

“So you did,” Walter smiled slightly in exasperated amusement. “But you have to send me that in a report Travis, so you could have saved yourself the trouble and me the time if you had just sent it.”

“I just wanted to let you know,” Travis told him with a grin, his white teeth gleaming against his dark complexion.

  “You're excited.”

“I am,” he nodded. “We're surpassing the top online stores and making strides into the marketplace. I am more than excited. I'm psyched!”

  “Keep up the good work.”

  “Thanks, Walter.”

Walter nodded and made his way into the large conference room where everyone was already waiting for
him. “Gentlemen, I'm sorry I kept you waiting. Glenna, please stay to take the minutes,” he told his secretary. “We'll get right to pressing matters. I've been doing a lot of thinking, researching and running cost analysis. We haven't had a price increase for the past year and we made a promise to sell below our competitors. We've been doing that and I think we should keep it that way for now.”

“I think we should increase the price of the ladies’ wear. It's shown a steady increase in sales over the past year or so. The women are buying like crazy,” a board member by the name of Manuel insisted.

“I don’t agree,” Walter said firmly. “We made a promise and we're keeping it.”

“You look good,” Savannah Parker greeted Carole as she came towards the table. “Like a rich man’s wife,” she added with a grin.

“And in those scrubs you stand out like a sore thumb,” Carole responded with a smile as she greeted the girl with a hug. “I thought you would have stopped working by now.”

“Gavin is threatening to buy the hospital and fire me,” she said with a grimace as she placed her hand over her bulging belly. “He's all talk.”

“You mean you have him wrapped around your little finger.”

“That too,” Savannah said with a grin.

Carole took the napkin and spread it over the almost sheer cotton skirt she was wearing. It was the middle of August and the weather was at its worst with thunderstorms brewing and the heat coming off the pavements in waves. It was a task even to step from the car and into the restaurant. The restaurant wasn't as fancy as she had become used to since she'd been married to Walter, but it wasn't bad at all.

“I have a craving for southern fried chicken and here they serve the best,” Savannah thanked the waiter as he placed the large bowl of crispy fried chicken in front of them. “I hope you don’t mind me ordering for both of us.”

“No, that’s fine.” Carole didn't have the heart to tell the woman that she was on a diet and besides, the chicken smelled divine. “I grew up in a Christian home,” she continued as she broke off a piece of the tender chicken and tasted it. Her eyes widened as she tasted the honey and garlic and something else.

“I read that somewhere.” Savannah had dispensed with her fork and had the thigh in her fingers as she ate appreciatively. “Your parents split up and your mother's living in Europe.”

“When I was a little girl we used to go to church every Sunday. Without missing a Sunday. And on Wednesdays there used to be Bible studies and then on Fridays youth fellowship. There used to be devotions every morning and at nights before we went to bed.” Carole sipped her flavored water to cool her throat. She had no idea why she was telling the girl this because she rarely ever spoke about her past. “I used to think that my parents were perfect. Surely they had the ear of God and nothing wrong could ever happen to us. Until I turned fifteen and came home to see my mother sitting in the kitchen and she told me my father had moved out because he'd fallen in love with someone else.” She waved her hand. “Someone from church and they were moving to Florida to start a new life. My mother was destroyed and I had to pick up the pieces.”

“I understand,” Savannah nodded in sympathy. “My father was a piece of work. We're just now getting past our differences.”

Carole ate the chicken and toyed with the fries, which she was not going to touch. “My dad and his new wife died when they were on their way to the hospital to have their new baby. I never felt anything. He left without saying goodbye and didn't call again until he called to tell me he was getting married again a year later. My mother drank herself into a stupor and I had to fend for myself. When she heard that they had died in that crash she told me that God was still working on her behalf. I stopped going to church after I moved out of the house.”

“You still keep in touch with her?”

“I do. She was at my wedding and made it her duty to tell me that what I have with Walter would never last. That I should enjoy it while I can and take all I can get.” Carole sipped her water again and stared off across the room. “Between her and my mother-in-law, I think I'm in for quite an experience.”

“Barbara Bingham is quite a character.” Savannah wiped her fingers on the napkin and reached across to clasp the Carole's hands. “Rise above her, honey, and don’t let her let you think that she's better than you are.”

“She's not my worry,” Carole said with a wintry smile. “I dealt with people like Barbara when I was selling houses. I can deal with the likes of her. I want children, Savannah, and I want to have them all at once.”

“How many are you talking about?”

“Four.” She smiled at the look on the girl’s face. “I know there are twins and a triplet in this clique so I want to bring the quadruplets in.”

“Does Walter knows about this?” Savannah asked intuitively.

“Not yet. I want to find out everything before I sell him on the idea.”

“Are you sure? On child is a handful, never mind four.”

“I was born to be a mother and that’s what I want to do.”

“Okay, honey. I know a doctor who specializes in this and he's very discreet. You do know that everything we do is news right?”

“I do,” Carole nodded. “And I don’t care. I just want this.”

  *****

“How was your day?” Walter passed her the salad bowl as he asked her the question. He'd called and told her that if she wanted to go ahead and eat without him she should do so as he was running late. She'd waited for him and he'd come home at seven. They were having their meal out on the balcony, which afforded them a lovely view of the almost hidden lake.

“I had lunch with Savannah today.” She ladled out a generous amount of the vegetables and handed it back to him. Dinner was usually a formal affair, but she'd told the housekeeper firmly that today was a regular Thursday and surely they didn't have to dine as if they were entertaining the President. So she'd reluctantly set out just knives and forks on the table instead of the usual array of cutlery. And Carole had just put on a simple cotton dress with thin straps.

“Good,” he nodded. “I'm happy you're making friends.”

“That’s not the only reason I saw her, Walter.”

“Oh?” His thick black brows arched as he leaned back and sipped his wine. “So tell me.”

“We've been discussing it since getting married. I want children.”

“And when the time is right we'll have them.”

“You know I'm thinking about quadruplets.”

“And I told you that it isn't possible.”

“I may not go to church again but I have a lot of faith.” She played with the delicate stem of her wine glass. “I got the name of a fertility doctor and I'm meeting with him tomorrow.”

He put aside his glass and his dark grey eyes turned smoky. “Without talking to me first?”

“I've spoken to you several times and you always put me off. We got married in haste and never really get to know each other. I let you call all the shots. I signed a prenup—”

  “I asked you not to.”

“You told me it was standard procedure and that it will automatically dissolve when we have kids.”

“Is that why you want to do this?”

“I love you!” she cried passionately. “From the very first time I saw you in that crowded room, I knew I was in trouble and you know it.”

“I love you too,” he told her soberly. “I want children eventually but I'm not going to a fertility clinic. I want one or two children and that’s it.”

  “We can afford more.”

“And when the children come we're going to drift apart. I have plans for us. Plans to travel the world. I want to get to know you better and spend time with you.”

She abandoned her place at the table and came over to his side. He made room for her on his lap and leaned back to give her space. “Do you think I will let children come between us? Walter, you're my world!” she cried softl
y as she cupped his handsome face. She had nightmares that he was going to wake up and realize that he could do so much better than her, but she kept her insecurities from him. She'd seen him across the room with the blonde beauty clinging to his arms. He had been wearing a light blue shirt and tan pants with a dark blue sports jacket . His thick dark hair had been combed back from his broad forehead, and she'd been immediately captivated by him. He'd looked up and noticed her and their eyes had met. He'd come over a few minutes later and asked her for a dance and she'd drifted into his arms. They'd forgotten about everyone else around them, including his date, as they'd stared at each other. He'd taken her back to his apartment that night and had torn the clothes from her body as he made frantic love to her. They hadn't slept that night and their cries had echoed throughout the apartment.

“I want this,” she whispered as she bent her head to take his lips with hers. The passion between them was instantaneous and wild. He deepened the kiss, his fingers biting into her hips. The housekeeper had left for the day so they were all alone. He'd taken off his tie and jacket and Carole frantically tore at the buttons of his shirt to get to his chest. Her fingers dug into the solidness of him, her fingernails grazing the hairs there. He lifted her up and fought to release his rigid penis. She climbed over him and he impaled her, pushing deep into her until she clung to him with a gasp as he touched her core. He pulled the dress over her head and bent to take a small puckered nipple inside his mouth, sucking on it urgently. She rode him with frantic haste that had them both falling to the carpeted floor. He changed position and lifted her feet to his shoulders as he pounded into her, his expression intense, his breathing shallow. He spread her legs and then wrapped them around his neck as he leaned over her, his eyes turbulent. He bent his head and took her lips with his in a kiss so searing that it stung her mouth and heated her tongue. She whimpered as she dragged her nails down his back, causing him to wince slightly. The orgasm was swift and explosive and carried them both off to worlds that were definitely hard to comprehend.
