Chapter 1
Ian stepped out of the shower and reached for the towel to wrap around his waist before striding into the adjoining bedroom, his thoughts elsewhere. He could still smell her perfume coming from the room that he had not remembered to lock after they had finished using it. He might have gone a little too far in tightening the silk ties around her wrists. He had seen the marks after he had untied her. But she had been jerking around in excitement as he trailed the silk whip along her quivering flesh. He had been seeing Lillian Matheson for the past month and even though the relationship was pleasurable enough, he found that he was getting tired of her telling him to spank her harder and make it rough! He was kinky as hell and he enjoyed her enthusiasm but her penchant for wanting him to resort to violence was wearing on his nerves. Ian walked into the room he called his sexual escape and went over to put away the whips and the silk scarves he had used to tie her wrists. He had a housekeeper who came in three times a week but the door to this room was always kept locked. He did the tidying up himself. He was not ashamed of how he was and the way he got his pleasure, but he had a feeling that the middle-aged Mrs. Margaret Beadle would certainly not understand or be able to look at his ‘toys’ without having a faint! He smiled grimly as he returned the handcuffs to their relevant drawers before exiting the room and locking the door behind him. It was close to midnight but he was not in the least bit sleepy. He had reports to wade through for a meeting in the morning and he had not done so yet, which meant that he would be getting a couple of hours sleep at best, but he was used to it. They had acquired a chain of hotels recently and he was in charge of seeing that they become functional by December, which gave him six months to do so. He had handpicked a team to work with him and was satisfied that they would be able to get it done. His father was adamant that he should take over the running of the billion dollar holding company, which had assets as diversified as a holding company could be. The pharmaceutical company they had acquired a year ago was slowly but surely coming together and Epic Holdings was slowly raking in the profit. There had been some problems with the FDA when they had first acquired the company but that had been smoothed over, thankfully. Now the company was on its way to delivering the best drugs on the market and was also working on several new ones. Ian was in charge of that as well.
He took off the towel and stared at himself in the full-length mirror in his bedroom, his dark brown eyes, with the golden highlights, wandering objectively over his long, lean, muscled body. He knew that he was considered very attractive by the opposite sex and he knew it without being cocky about it. He had dark brown hair and a lean handsome face that he had inherited from his dad. He worked out pretty regularly and belonged to a kickboxing club. He was also a member of the exclusive Elite Club. He was wealthy enough, and charming enough, to get anything he wanted and when he was in a room he was usually the center of attention. It had been that way since he was a child and it had only grown more when he became an adult. He ran his fingers through his thick hair and stepped back from the mirror to go over to the chest of drawers where he took out neatly folded baggy sweatpants. He had some work to do in his study and it was going to take several hours. He was sexually sated and the restlessness he had been feeling had all but disappeared so it was time for him to get to work!

Stephanie could not sleep. She had tried everything and it was not working. The herbal tea had managed to make her feel lethargic and slightly mellow but it had not put her to bed. Reading a novel that she had put aside since the week started had not managed it either so she was up and pacing again. She was aware that whenever she went to bed late, she woke up feeling groggy and out of sorts. She ran a day care center which meant that she had to be her best to deal with the children, and their parents, who came to her on a daily basis. She had started the day care because she had a particular love for kids and had a connection to them. It had started out small when she had decided to put her child psychology degree to use and start something of her own, but it had grown bigger over the last five years, forcing them to move from the small location to somewhere larger, a few blocks away from where they had originally been located. Stephanie offered something extra. It was not just somewhere working parents could safely leave their kids. It was also a place where they were involved in a number of activities, both indoors and outdoors, to stimulate their growing minds. She had a staff of four dedicated ladies who had the children’s interests at heart as well and they worked well together. Her life was full, no matter what her friends thought to the contrary... and her mother as well. So what if she was thirty years old and not in a relationship? She had tried that and it had ended disastrously. She had no intention of repeating the same mistake! Her mind shied away from thinking about it and she forced herself to think about something
else. She was better off alone, and she was not really alone either because she had her business and the kids who came to the day care on a regular basis. She got joy through that. Her life was full and she did not envy anyone who had someone to go out with on dates. She was not shy about going out on her own to the movies or anywhere else she had a mind to go. She even went to the opera by herself and never felt the slightest bit intimidated by the couples there. She sat and enjoyed the show and then left. She dug her fingers through her thick natural dark hair and wondered if it was time for her to get it braided. It was too long, going past her shoulders, and too thick for her to handle properly. Stephanie never looked at herself in the mirror for a long period of time because she did not believe in flaunting her physical beauty. She was all business and dressed the part, suppressing her sensuality as best as she was able to. Her hair was never loose but neatly pinned at the nape of her neck or in thick braids whenever she got the chance to go to the hair stylist. Her clothes and shoes were sensible and even when she was going out her outfit was never revealing. She was not out to attract the opposite sex and she made that abundantly clear. With a sigh of impatience she went to the kitchen to make herself another cup of tea, hoping that it would do the trick!

Ian presided over the meeting with the efficiency and intellect that was expected of him. He lounged back in the chair at the head of the long glass table, looking at ease in his dark gray pinstriped jacket and light pink inside shirt, a gray and pink tie at his neck. He listened to the members’ contribution before making some of his own. His father, Andrew Douglas, was content to let his son take the lead while he listened and made mental notes. Their latest acquisition was a string of old battered down hotels. Plans were being made for the best way to go about the remodeling of the chain that had fallen into disrepair over the years but had excellent potential. His son had been the one to acquire the chain for a reasonable price, after he had done the leg work, and now he was suggesting the ways they could go about restoring them. He was an excellent businessman, putting his Wharton business school degree to very good use. Andrew was a very proud father in every way except one: his son’s reputation as a sexual deviant was no secret and it was interfering with him being handed over the reins of the company. He had spoken to him before, several times, but Ian had told him that what he did outside of the company was his own personal business.
“Dad?” Ian looked at his father quizzically.
“Yes?”
“We are prepared to vote on the start date to get the renovations streamlined. The contractor is rearing to go but there is still the zoning commission to see to. You said you would deal with that part of it. Have you?”
Andrew shook his head slightly as he looked at the people around him. “I am in dialogue with the city council as we speak. I am supposed to hear from them today.”
Ian nodded, staring at the man at the other head of the table for a brief moment before he spoke to the rest of the men and women gathered around the table. Within a few minutes he tabled the meeting and they filed out, leaving Ian and his dad in the room. Ian got to his feet, and without asking he poured them both two cups of coffee and brought it over to him.
“Everything okay?” He pulled out a chair next to the older man, his eyes on him.
“I was just listening to you make your points to the team and I realized, not for the first time, how very good you are at this sort of thing,” Andrew said with a smile.
“Dad your admiration for the way I do my job is appreciated as usual but I know that something is on your mind.”
Andrew sipped the excellent coffee for a moment before he responded. “You will be taking over pretty soon–”
“Not for a while,” Ian said, holding up a hand as he leaned back in his chair. “I know the speech you are going to give me and I do not want to hear it now. I am who I am and I have no intention of changing that.”
“Even if it means that there are questions about you taking over from me?”
Ian loosened his tie and put a shiny loafer on his knee, his expression mild. “I work my ass off for this company and that should be enough. I am not going to allow some board members to dictate the kind of person I should be.”
“You are an exemplary businessman with the smarts to know what will work and what will not. But your activities in the bedroom leaks into the boardroom, because the women you take to your bed are not shy on talking about what goes on there.”
Ian shrugged carelessly. “I have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Andrew put aside his cup of coffee and stared at his son with eyes that he had passed on to him. “I am sure you don’t but the board members are old and dignified men who think otherwise.”
Ian looked at his father in amusement. “Daniel Bent is married for the fourth time. Milton Williams has a mistress that could be his granddaughter, he keeps her stashed in some apartment uptown. Benny Bailey has a predilection towards men even though he has been married for the past forty years and has children and grandchildren. Please don’t talk to me about dignity where they are concerned dad, it borders on hypocrisy.”
“How do you know all of this?” Andrew asked with a frown.
Ian shrugged. “The company has an excellent P.I. firm and I have a tendency to know who I am dealing with, especially when they behave as if they are as pure as the driven snow.” He leaned forward. “I am unencumbered by a wife and kids dad, and pretty much get to do whatever the hell I want.”

“I think Louise is coming down with something” Rachel said the minute she stepped into Stephanie’s office. “Her temperature is elevated.”
“Have you taken her into the sick bay?” Stephanie put aside the chart she had been preparing and looked up at the woman.
Rachel nodded. “Do you think we should call her mom?”
“Dahlia told me that she would be going out of town today. Just make sure she is comfortable and I will be in to check on her.”
Rachel nodded and stared at the chart Stephanie had in front of her, admiring the lines of drawing and the beautiful colors. “You could do that for a living.”
“More as a vocation,” Stephanie said with a smile. “It relaxes me and I was thinking of hanging it in the recreation room.”
“It will certainly brighten up the room. We are taking the kids outside for some much-needed exercise. Yesterday’s heat wave meant that they had to stay indoors for the entire time and they are getting restless.”
“I will join you as soon as I check on Louise.”
The woman nodded and left the room, closing the door behind her. Stephanie put aside the chart she had been drawing and rubbed the sides of her head. She had managed to get some sleep but it had not been enough. She was still suffering from the effects of the lack of sleep and her movements were sluggish. She had been drinking coffee since she came in at seven and this was her fourth cup, but it had not done the trick. She would be the one working late tonight. She needed a day to just sleep in without interruption but she had no idea when that would be. Leaning back against the chair she closed her eyes for a brief moment and found herself drifting off to sleep, snapping her eyes open just as the phone started to ring! With a weary sigh, she reached for it, forcing her tone to belie the exhaustion due from lack of sleep!

“You look like hell,” Gina commented as soon as she took her seat opposite to her friend. “And I am being nice.” She signaled for the waiter and when he came over she ordered the grilled cheese sandwich.
Stephanie waited until the man had left before responding. “I was hoping that washing my face with cold water would have done the trick,” she said wryly, as she reached for her orange juice to take a sip. “I was not able to seep last night for some reason.”
“Maybe all that oil from not having sex is finally getting to you,” Gina said mildly.
“You are disgusting.”
“I am being honest. There is this cute guy at the
office, not too nerdy but certainly your type. He just got out of a relationship a few weeks ago and is single. I spoke to him about you and he wants to meet you.”
“I am not interested,” Stephanie told her firmly.
“You have not met him yet. He is a decent sort and you don’t have to date him with the intention of going into a relationship. All you have to do is get laid, it is that simple.”
Stephanie waited while their meal was being served before responded. “How is Michael?” she asked, changing the subject.
With a sigh, Gina knew that the discussion had come to a close. “He is being Michael as usual. The world is out to get him, or rather his boss does not like him and is deliberately piling on all this work to try and break him or get rid of him. I swear that man sees conspiracy theories everywhere.”
“Don’t you get tired of his constant complaining?” Stephanie asked her curiously as she ate her fries.
“Every single day. But I am in love with him, so I put up with it.” Her dark brown eyes studied her friend’s flawless complexion. “You will find out what I am talking about one day.”
“You have more faith than I have where that is concerned.” For a moment Stephanie stared at the vinyl wallpaper sightlessly before she spoke again. “Men have a way of showing their true colors when they are well into the relationship.”

Ian opened the door to the main hall and carefully stepped into the large room, his eyes moving swiftly to the peeling silk wallpaper before going to the fireplace which was still functional. He was aware that investing in hotels at this stage was risky at best, when people were leaning more toward renting entire homes for a very good price. But he knew that the chain had potential and just needed the proper renovations and enough PR to get it going. He did this whenever they acquired a company: he would examine the building personally before any work had been done to it and see it in his mind’s eyes as it would look when it was finished. He was doing so now. He would advise that they kept the fireplace because it would give the place a homely look for the people who stayed at one point or the other. He exited the room and wandered around several other rooms, admiring the solid hardwood columns rising above him and decided that they would be restoring that as well. The elevators were not in working order so he had to take the stairs to get to the other floors. The hotel faced the harbor and gave a spectacular view of the boats nestled on the water. He was in the penthouse suite and in spite of the peeling wallpaper, and the shabbiness of the carpet, the suite was quite impressive. He pulled out his phone and made a recording, his eyes examining the walls again. No more wallpapers, he decided. A rich burgundy color would do the trick and the drapes at the windows would not do. The view should be unhindered. It would be part of the charm of the place. He left the suite and went to examine several others before he went back into the main lobby. The work would be starting next week and he had to make sure he had what he needed before the men started working. He also had a meeting to pitch his ideas in the morning. He was flying to the UK for a couple of days and wanted to tie up everything before he left. He nodded to his driver who held the car door open for him and slid into the padded leather seat.
